The Value of Self Care
Over the last couple of years, I realized how important it is to take good care of yourself and prioritize doing things that make us happy, less stressed and more relaxed. Less than a year ago, I often worked 55+ hours a week (on top of my commute) which meant that I was barely home on the weekdays. After I got home from work (very late), I ate dinner, took a shower and went to bed. I didn’t workout consistently and did not have the greatest diet as I prioritized convenience over health. It was a miserable experience and definitely not the way to live at just 28 years old. My mental health started to become affected and I felt burnout, exhausted and just plain awful. I realized that something needed to change. With the encouragement of my family and boyfriend, I decided to switch jobs and found a position in my field much closer to home. This has been game changing as now I have much more free time. I also realized that I needed to start doing things for me and my mental health to get back to a happier state. I started to incorporate daily habits into my routine that have helped me tremendously. I now practice self-care daily through simple habits that help calm me and allow me to feel in control of my life and happiness.
We frequently say that we just don’t have time for self care and it is not one of our priorities. I am not a mom myself so I can’t speak from first hand experience, but I often hear moms say they don’t have time to take care of themselves. In these situations, I think of the oxygen mask scenario on an airplane – you won’t be able to help anyone else until you help yourself. You need to designate self care as a non negotiable task on your calendar. It is not selfish to take care of yourself. In fact, I think it is selfless, as it allows you to feel good and have the energy to be the greatest version of yourself for others! It is a win-win! Nobody wants to be around a tired and groggy person. By taking care of yourself, you will attract more positives vibes into your life. I think everyone deserves to have their alone time and spend some time doing things that they love, that feed their soul and make them happy. It will change your life for the better!
